Mission: Instruction is managed so that children can become more autonomous, search for answers themselves, follow multi-step instructions independently, and feel successful that they've reached their goals with support but also with a high degree of independence. The curriculum fosters cooperative learning where children feel comfortable helping one another. This is a time when children begin to develop leadership skills and feel more comfortable expressing themselves through writing, peer interactions, and class participation.

Curriculum: In fourth grade, we emphasize the basic skills, which are integrated into a well-rounded curriculum in order to assist all students in reaching their potential. In order to reach the individual needs of our students, we use diverse teaching styles. Our instruction focuses on problem solving in mathematics, greater elaboration on written assignments, and improved comprehension in reading.

Language Arts Themes: Risks and Consequences, Nature's Delicate Balance, Changing America, Science Fair, America on the Move, Dollars/Sense

Writing: Empowering Writers, Focus on Narrative Writing

Math:To improve CMT mathematics skills, student participate in seasonal math centers where students cooperatively use strategies to solve problems in all areas of mathematics. Through these special events, students are able to improve skills by becoming active participants in their own learning.

Math: MacMillan McGraw-Hill, Math Connects

Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, Multiplying Whole Numbers, Dividing Whole Numbers, Measurement in both the Customary and Metric Systems, Perimeter/Area, Time and Elapsed Time, Two-Dimensional Geometry, Develping Fractions, Decimals, Concepts, Adding and Subtracting Fractions and Mixed Numbers, Using Factors and Multiples, Using Algebraic Expressions, Using Equations and Function Tables, Displaying and Interpreting Data, Using Probability to Make Predictions

Science: (Delta) Study Topics Include: Rocks and Minerals, Light and Sound, Color, Erosion

Social Studies: Study Topics Include: Map Skills - Filling in a blank map with the names of the states, Citizenship and Government, Immigration

Social Studies and Science are also integrated into our Imagine It reading program.

Message to Parents: Ms. Lussier, Mrs. Miceli, and Mrs. Severino would like to welcome you to 4th grade at Oakdale School. Fourth grade can be an adventurous and challenging year for many students. It is a time for growing and learning, as children become more independent. We are available to assist you and your child to meet their academic, social and emotional needs throughout the school year. Please contact your child's teacher as you feel necessary.
