Special Events: Each year we plan joint activities with our first grade friends. We also plan a yearly field trip that coordinates with the classroom curriculum.

Grade 1 Curriculum:
The First Grade Language Arts curriculum uses
the Imagine It! program which addresses the five key areas of reading:
Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension
The Imagine It! Program:
· Gives students the foundation of reading skills
· Provides practice that increases their confidence
· Assesses their progress along the way
· Provides additional help and challenges where they need it
· Teaches them writing strategies
· Inspires them with reading selections across a variety of genres
The following themes are covered in first grade:

Science, Social Studies and Character Education are integrated throughout the Imagine It! program.
DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Literacy Skills)
is used to assess the students’ progress in language arts three times a year.
Growing with Mathematics
is the program used for math in the first grade.
It is designed to provide significant, carefully sequenced mathematics
that utilizes children’s experiences, interests, and ability to think.
There are twelve topics that are covered:
· Reviewing Number Concepts
· Understanding Addition and Subtraction
· Working with Time, Length and Money
· Numbers to 20 and Number Patterns
· Building Addition and Subtraction
· Place Value: Numbers to 100
· Measurement and Geometry
· Working with Number and Operations
· More Measurement and Geometry
· Extending Work with Number and Operations
· Equal Parts, Fair Shares, and Fractions
· Working with Two-Digit Numbers
